Fountains, Nordstrom Rack, and the scene in the food court

Last time I updated this blog, Andrew was just starting baby food and was not even close to walking. Today, he is a bustling 2 year old who is running (not walking!) and keeping us now seasoned (yeah right) parents on our toes. The-- er, terrific twos have definitely set in!

Today, we had the bright idea of taking Andrew back to the fountains at a local outdoor shopping area. We went over spring break, and he loved it. It was sunny and 86 degrees that day, with no wind.

Today... it was not. The temperature seemed to plummet during the 10 minute drive there, and when we got out of the car it was 75 with a stiff wind! Brrr! So we aborted that mission and went to the mall (as any good parents would do, of course).

There's a new store there, Nordstrom Rack. AKA-- exorbitant prices slashed to be slightly less (but still) exorbitant. I actually saw a rack with a sign that said "19.97-199.97." Really?? And the poor employees... walking around in full suits to fold shirt stacks and stand behind a register. It works at a high end mall... but not at that one!

We had a good time, though. Andrew is now terrified of the carousel for some reason, which led to a massive tantrum when I tried to take him on it. I think he was hungry, though, because he only nibbled at supper. Well, maybe "nibbled" is a little generous. He threw is fork across the table and refused to eat. I made chicken and rice, and he was not a fan. He is getting to be a picky eater!

Anyway, we got him Chick-Fil-A for the first time, and they have an AWESOME kid's meal. I had no idea! 4 chicken nuggets, juice, and a fruit cup for $3.25. And it's not one of those pre-packaged, syrup filled fruit cups. It's literally a fresh fruit cup with grapes, strawberries, mandarin oranges, and apple chunks. Not to mention the white meat chicken. We will never go to Sonic again!

Anyway, as we were finishing, this mom sitting near us started yelling at her 2 or 3 year old son for spilling his chocolate milk. And I mean YELLING. My back was turned, but as I stood up, I heard her say "Why did you do that! So STUPID!" Terry was facing her and said the mother slapped him upside the head and roughed him up by the shoulders as she said it. The kid was convulsing in tears. I felt so, so horrible for him. I wanted to go over there and give him a hug.

After that, we took Andrew to the little play area. I played with him for awhile, then Terry took over long enough for me to pick him up an Easter basket, grass, and some eggs for $3.00 at the "A Dollar" store. I'm grateful for Andrew's birthday money, because that is the only way we could afford to do anything for Easter!

Andrew passed out on the way home. Poor baby-- it was 9:30 by the time we made it back. He was so exhausted that he let me just put him in bed, clothes and all. That hasn't happened since he was... 3 months old? I feel bad-- usually we have his nightly routine with a bath, a cup, a few Bible stories, family prayer, etc. Not tonight! Oh well-- one night won't hurt anything, I suppose. Tomorrow is a new day!

Seriously?!?!?!? Four months? Yeah, I'm pretty sure my blog followers have long given up by now. Not that I blame them.

Oh well. Might as well post for posterity.

So here's a quick catch-up:

Andrew:
Nearly 9 months old now (What?!?!) and doing great.
Milestones Achieved: sitting up, rolling both directions, pivoting around with his arms, two new teeth on the bottom, eating 3 baby food meals a day, and displaying his budding sense of humor.
Milestones In Progress: Crawling (he's trying so hard!), Standing (doing pretty well) and self-feeding (yeah-- not happening. Yet.)

Terry
School: Terry graduates with his BA in History in early December.
Job: Still working at the UC at UTA. Looking for a "real" job after graduation.
Life in General: Tired but good. Lots going on.

Liz
School: Still at UTD for Speech-Language Pathology. Three semesters left after this one. Expected grad date is May 2011.
Job: One eight month old. Wages include grins, giggles, little hands exploring her face and the occasional two toothed bite mark on her extremities.
Life in General: Never been so tired, but wouldn't trade her son for anything.

The Family

Living Situation: Moving to North Dallas on December 5th. The place is called Celery Stalk Apartments. Happy with the area (5 minutes from UTD), but involves a lot of life changes (mainly a new church we have yet to find).
Overall Well being: Making it. We laugh a lot.

Pretty much it. I'd say I'll be sure to post more, but... who knows. But I will try.

Yum Yum Carrots!

I need to post the picture I have of Andrew eating his carrots. He has orange goo smeared all over his face and bib and is grinning at the camera. Such a cutie.

He did really well with some really thick rice cereal on Sunday, so I figured it was time to start the jarred baby food. He had carrots for the first time on Monday. It went really well! The first time he had rice cereal, he took maybe 2 bites and then cried. I was expecting more of the same with the carrots, but he ate nearly half a jar of them his first time out. He startled at the flavor when I gave him his first bite on Monday, but then he seemed to get used to it. Tuesday and today have gone well, too. He startles at the flavor every day, and today he didn't even seem to like it at first. But supposedly it can take up to ten times of trying a new food before a baby decides whether to like it or not. I guess we'll see.

Dr. Hays, his pediatrician, told us to keep him on a single food for several days before introducing a new one. That way if he has a reaction to something we won't have to guess at what caused it, like we would if he tried several new foods at a time. I'm keeping him on each new food for 4 days. So far so good with carrots, and we're in day 3. On Friday, he'll get to try peas. Peas are my FAVORITE, so I hope he likes them. If he does, I can probably talk Terry into having them more often!

He's become a champ at rolling over onto his tummy, and he's started sleeping that way. I kept him from doing that as a newborn at my pediatrician's recommendation, and because he kept setting off our Angel Care monitor when he was on his tummy. An Angel Care monitor is one that goes under the mattress and monitors breathing and movement. It goes off if no movement (ie, breathing) is detected within 20 seconds. The fact that he was setting it off made me wonder if he was experiencing some sort of apnea. He never set it off on his back. But anyway, now that he can flip himself over, according to our doctor, it's okay for him to stay that way. Not that I could probably stop him if I wanted to, though. I'd be in there 12 times a night flipping him!

Terry and I are doing well. This summer semester schedule is rough, and we don't see a lot of each other during the week. We're making it, though.

More to come.

Well, THAT'S a first!

Lots of "firsts" going on in our neck of the woods these days. Yesterday Andrew tackled three in a row: he rolled over from his back to his tummy, then straight from his tummy to his back (he looked like he was rolling down a mountain and seemed VERY surprised by the sensation- it was cute), then later on in the day shocked me by catching his pacifier and pushing it back into his mouth before it fell out. I was surprised at how proud I felt-- I couldn't stop smiling or snuggling on him. Our strong, smart little guy!

He stirred around 6:00 this morning, a little early for him, and it didn't take me long to figure out why. When I went into his room, he had rolled onto his tummy and had two little legs poking out of the crib slats, kicking back and forth. Poor little guy, he had no idea how to get himself out! He's never been a fan of tummy time, but he seems to like it a little better when he gets there himself. He hasn't quite mastered rolling back over to his back, he's only done it once, so he gets a little frustrated. But wow, he's just hitting milestones left and right. It's getting easier and a lot more fun to take care of him!

He started rice cereal a week and a half ago. He has it every morning. At first he just gave me a "What's THAT?" look and spit it out, but he's getting better about swallowing and eating from a spoon now. Once he masters it, we'll start him on jarred baby food. I already bought a jar of Beech Nut Sweet Baby Carrots, but I'm holding off on feeding it to him until he gets a little better with his cereal. I can't wait, though! I've been looking forward to feeding him solid foods for MONTHS!

He's giggling a lot more, and he's become ticklish. His neck is especially ticklish, just like me, so you can get a giggle from him if you "chomp" on his neck a little (not like me, LOL). He's also discovered his feet. I bought him some foot rattles and it was hilarious to see him play with them. He was trying so hard to get them off his feet, but they're like little shoes and wouldn't go anywhere. So finally he decided to make the best of it and started talking to them. "Ooo, Oooo, Agooo!!!"

I'm utterly in love with a four month old sack of sweetness. =D

Hey everyone! Andrew is down for a nap at the moment, so I thought I'd squeeze in a quick update.

The last week or so has been pretty routine. Class, work, hanging out with Andrew. We're all doing well. Andrew is getting better at tummy time-- he can lift his head up like a pro these days. I have a really cute video of it that I need to post. It has no sound (it was taken on our digital camera), but it's still really cute. He has his four month shots scheduled for Monday, and he'll hopefully start rice cereal within the next week or so.

I'm still waiting to hear from UTD and getting pretty impatient. =) Terry is still working at the UC. We're both still in classes, our finals are next Tuesday, and then we start the second summer session Wednesday. No rest for the weary!
